St John

October 13, 2007

St. John’s University in Jamaica, N.Y. held a workshop on October 13, 2007, entitled “The Just and Moral Society: From Ideal to Reality.”  S. Catherine Feeney, Executive Director of the SSND Education Center in Ozone Park, N.Y. gave a presentation entitled, “The Right to and Responsibility for Education: Critical Literacy as a Vehicle of Hope.”

This workshop examined emerging educational theories and models to achieving a just and moral society.  The notion of “local literacies” found in diverse populations was discussed within a framework of critical literacy and viewed through the perspective of educating incarcerated youth.  The School Sisters of Notre Dame Educational Center demonstrated successful outreach and educational models for immigrant and underserved women in the United States, embracing the belief that women are the agents of transformation for family, communities and the world.

Also presenting at the workshop was Brett Elizabeth Blake, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Graduate Adolescent Education Programs in the School of Education, St. John's University.  The event was moderated by Belenna M. Lauto, M.A., Associate Professor, Department of Fine Arts, St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. John's University.

This workshop was sponsored by the Talbot Foundation.
