Our own Sister Eileen McCarthy turned in a strong performance at the 2006 Massachusetts National Senior Olympics qualifiers held this past summer. The Senior Olympics are held for two weeks every two years on the odd numbered years at different venues around the country. Seniors 55 or older compete in five year age groups in the same sports as the International Olympics. In order to qualify one has to compete in his/her state on the preceding year and come in first or second place in each event trial. Sister Eileen came in second place in her three events in June.
She has been competing since 1999 in the 50, 100 and 200 yard backstroke and generally finishes at tenth or eleventh on the national level, although in 2001 she came in sixth and eighth and received ribbons for those events. The 2007 nationals will take place in Louisville, Kentucky the last week in June through the first week in July. This year’s qualifying events were especially gratifying to Eileen as she had broken her leg in June of 2005 but worked hard at recovery in the pool.
