Celebrate the Environment this Month
2017 June 5

During the month of June, the world will observe two days pertaining to the health of our planet, World Environment Day, June 5th, and World Oceans Day June 8th.

June 5th World Environment Day

"Connecting People to Nature", the theme for World Environment Day 2017, implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share. This year’s theme invites you to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship.

June 8th: Why celebrate World Oceans Day?

The theme for World Oceans Day 2016 is Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet. Every day, but especially on World Oceans day, we are asked to focus on what actions each of us can take to protect the ocean and safeguard vulnerable communities and places, with a lot of attention to the problem of plastic pollution in particular. Over the course of the last 25 years more than 145 million pounds of trash has been removed from the oceans. A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. Almost 3 billion people rely on the ocean as a primary source of protein. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve the world’s oceans. Oceans are very important:

  • They generate most of the oxygen we breathe
  • They help feed us
  • They regulate our climate
  • They clean the water we drink
  • They offer a pharmacopoeia of medicines
  • They provide limitless inspiration
