The Organization

The School Sisters of Notre Dame are members of an international congregation of women religious which was founded in Bavaria in 1833. The first sisters arrived in North America in 1847. The School Sisters of Notre Dame, now living and ministering on five continents, have their Generalate in Rome, Italy. Their mission is to proclaim the good news, directing their entire lives toward that oneness for which Jesus Christ was sent.

The mission expressed through the ministry of education. Urged by the love of Christ, we choose to express our mission through ministry directed toward education. For us, education means enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God’s image and assisting them to direct their gifts toward building the earth. Like Mother Theresa, we educate with the conviction that the world can be changed through the transformation of persons. Thus, our ministry demands a Christian vision of what the human person is called to be and what the world is destined to become.

The Atlantic-Midwest Province is one of the ten units in the international congregation. School Sisters from this province minister in Canada, England, Italy, South Sudan and the United States, with administrative and health care centers in Baltimore, MD, Chicago, IL, Waterdown, ON and Wilton, CT.
