2016 Aug 24

Sisters preparing for Oktoberfest

Each summer Sister Barbara Mary Slaney works hard getting ready for the School Sisters of Notre Dame Oktoberfest raffle that runs every fall.

The $100,000 she and her team of volunteers aim to raise every October goes to the Atlantic-Midwest Province, School Sisters of Notre Dame. The Oktoberfest event is the signature fundraiser for the sisters.

The money raised goes to help care for retired sisters and to the sponsored ministries of the Atlantic-Midwest Province.

“Our goal is to raise $125,000 but we’ve never reached that high of an amount before,” Sister Barbara Mary said. “But we have raised more than $100,000 in previous years.”

More than 20,000 letters have been sent out this summer to the greater School Sisters of Notre Dame community to advertise the raffle ticket sales. A chance to win starts at just $10. Every day in October there is a winner pulled from the large raffle drum with prize amounts ranging from $100 to $2,016 on October 31. And if someone wins then their ticket goes right back in the raffle drum for another chance to win.

Thousands of tickets are expected to be sold this year and every little bit helps. But some days Sister Barbara Mary is completed surprised.

“It’s quite intense,” she said. “You have lectures, and then train with canines, and you go out with them to different facilities like Target and other stores to practice how they would respond in public.”

“The other day we got a check for $1,000 and the person put on the ticket: “Gift to SSND” and they specified that if any of the tickets won that he would like to give the winnings to the sisters,” she said.

Seeing others contribute to School Sisters of Notre Dame reminds Sister Barbara Mary why she started helping out with Oktoberfest preparations.sisters really love him,” she said. “He brings them a little more happiness.”

Previously she served as an elementary school teacher and principal. She also spent more than 10 years working at the Maria Health Care Center. “I went into this so I could continue helping our sisters. Ultimately I’m helping myself and future sisters because the raffle supports the sisters who are in the skilled care facility and that could be me one day,” she said. “It helps everyone and I’m glad I can continue my ministry this way.”
