Action Alert for our friends in the US: Protect DACA Youth
2017 Sept 5

President Trump has announced a decision to wind down the policy on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) that protects nearly 800,000 immigrants who came to the United States as children from deportation. In light of the School Sisters of Notre Dame's commitment to Justice for Immigrants, we must continue to defend DACA.

We support the call of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious that "in the wake of this unconscionable action by President Trump, we urge Congress to immediately take up and pass the bipartisan Dream Act of 2017." Learn more about the bipartisan Dream Act 2017.

There is an urgency to this request for your response. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said it will no longer accept new applications for DACA, which provided renewable, two-year work permits to nearly 800,000 young people. Those already enrolled in DACA will be able to continue working until their permits expire. Those whose permits expire by March 5, 2018, will be permitted to apply for a two-year renewal as long as they do so by October 5. New applications and renewal requests already received by DHS before today will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, even those whose permits expire after March 5.

This SSND call to action will take place through Voter Voice, our platform for advocating on issues of concern to the School Sisters of Notre Dame. When Shalom contacts send alerts asking you to take action in the United States, Guam or Puerto Rico, you will be directed to a page on the SSND website.
