“What I was looking for was support, companions, solidarity, and support in
the mission.”

For 40 years, Lucy Strausbaugh has taught religion to young women at
Notre Dame Prep.

“I went to the College of Notre Dame which is now Notre Dame of Maryland University and when I took my first theology class I thought, "Oh, this is what I want to major in,” she said. “It’s what I always wanted to do.”

That passion for education and the SSND mission led her to the Associate program in 2007.

“I had been here a very long time and I knew the mission of SSND’s and had been forwarding that mission for years,” she said. “It made perfect sense to become an Associate because it’s what I was been living and breathing every day.”

She says the 18 months process to become an Associate and making her first covenant was delightful.

“The group I was in met regularly on Saturdays at the motherhouse in Baltimore. There were 8 of us, 4 pre-associates and 4 Associates who were our sponsors,” Lucy said. “We did readings on Mother Theresa Gerhardinger but it very much became a spirituality group. It was really wonderful.”

In addition to her position as NDP, Lucy also has a degree in pastoral counseling. She uses those skills at The Samaritan Women.

“I have spent a lot of time there working with the women as a counselor and a spirituality and religion teacher,” she said.

Her volunteering also extends to supporting one of the provinces commitments, stopping human trafficking. She said she works to educate people about human trafficking as a way of sharing the SSND mission.

Lucy says there are only two things people need when considering becoming an Associate: be a person of faith and have an affinity for the mission of SSNDs.
