Teachers in Catholic Schools Learn New English Skills

Around 120 teachers from Catholic schools in the Juba Archdiocese are attending an English language workshop that started Monday and will run for six weeks.
Sister Kathleen Feeley of the School Sisters of Notre Dame is facilitating the workshop. She teaches English at the Catholic University of Ghana. Sister Kathleen told Bakhita Radio that she has two goals for the workshop:
“My first goal is to make English more understandable in its complexity to all the teachers. So I want to go through phonetics, grammar, and certain structures and composition and then literature and poetry; take every aspect of English and try to raise the level of understanding and competency in each one.”
Sr. Kathleen added: “My second goal is to demonstrate some teaching methods that the teachers can use in their own classes. So, I'm going to try to talk about teaching and demonstrate the methods so that they see that there is another way of teaching, perhaps than the way they learned.”
The sister said the workshop is part of the wider program that ‘Solidarity with Southern Sudan’ wants to implement.
“There is this program called ‘Solidarity with Southern Sudan,’ which is a large program coming out of Rome and the religious orders to bring to Sudan two needed aspects: health care and education,” Sr. Kathleen explained.
The teachers will have two classes a day and the workshop is made up of two sessions.
