Mother Seton Academy Students Celebrate Foundation Day at Villa Assumpta
October 24, 2007
“I was so excited to have the opportunity to touch actual items that belonged to Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger,” said Teaisha Huntley, a sixth grader at Mother Seton Academy.
Teaisha was one of twelve sixth grade girls who visited our sisters at Villa Assumpta on Foundation Day, October 24th. S. Marianne Roderick, accompanied her students on the visit. The students socialized with the sisters and visited the Heritage Room, where they met S. Dorothy Daiger.
“[The sisters] sang for us,” said Mother Seton sixth grader Alayne Albertie. “They had beautiful voices.”
The students had the opportunity to speak with S. Margaret Malone who was on a home visit from her ministry in Africa. She shared her experiences about being in Africa with the students. The students then walked around the property and visited the labyrinth in front of the building.
During a special prayer service for the sisters, the students reverently reenacted the life of Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger and explained the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Knowing the background and charisms of the six Religious Sponsoring Organizations that founded Mother Seton Academy has been the focus of the students, faculty and staff for the 2007-2008 school year.
“It is important for us to understand upon whose shoulders we stand,” said S. Charmaine Krohe, president of Mother Seton Academy and visionary of this project. Mother Seton Academy was founded in 1993 and is named after the first American-born Saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton. The school will celebrate its 15th anniversary in September, 2008.
“They just loved seeing the young people dressed in our former habits,” said S. Bernice Feilinger. “That was very meaningful to our retired sisters. It was very clear that the young women worked very hard; it was very professionally done.”
“They certainly captured the spirit of Mother Theresa,” S. Bernice added. “We thought the gestures were very appropriate and beautiful. If Mother Theresa were here today, she would have applauded them. It made our Foundation Day experience very meaningful and very blessed.”
