It is disheartening to hear of the recent executive orders on immigration which calls illegal immigration “a clear and present danger” to the United States and to the world.
Drawing from our SSND tradition, and remaining true to our corporate stance on immigration, let us continue to:
- Support building bridges as opposed to building walls that seek only to divide and separate us;
- Opening our homes and welcoming the strangers as opposed to closing our doors to the many women and children who seek refuge from war, terrorism and violence in their homeland;
- Advocating for persons who are poor and vulnerable by providing services that address their immediate needs while calling for public policy decisions that shape a more just society.
The recent executive orders on immigration and refugees put vulnerable lives in harm’s way and make them more susceptible to human trafficking and other forms of violence. As we remain true to our Province stance on Immigration and our North American Shalom commitment to “open our homes to migrants and refugees,” let us continue to support those impacted by these executive orders. Let us continue to stand in solidarity with immigrant families, those we serve and those unknown to us, as we accompany them on their journey. Let us together, pray and work for a more just and peaceful world.

In his letter to President Trump, Pope Francis wrote, “Under your leadership, may America’s stature continue to be measured above all by its concern for the poor, the outcast and those in need who, like Lazarus, stand before our door.” Let us pray that we, too, ‘live in the spirit’ of our Pope’s prayer. “
