Music is one of the passions of my life.
My name is Hedy Ganter. I am a Canadian School Sister of Notre Dame and member of the Province of Latin America and the Caribbean. At the present time, I am living and ministering in a poor parish, Santa Ana in Asunción, Paraguay. You may wonder, ‘How on earth did you get there?’
One day, when I was eight or nine years old, at home on our farm in Canada, I was bored and restless because I could find nothing to read. All that was around was a book on the life of Saint Rose of Lima. I read it a few times (no other books around!) and kept wondering, ‘Where on earth is this place, Lima?’ Little did I know that forty-some years later I would be living and serving in Lima!
Many steps led me there. After entering the Convent, I served as a Teacher or Pastoral worker in Eastern and Western Canada. The last of these ministries was with the Indigenous people in the north of Canada. In 1993, I was asked if I ever thought of going to Latin America. I said, “No, not really.” My Superior said, “Well, think about it”. After that, the thought never left my mind, and in November of 1994, I found myself, yes, in Lima Peru! Since then I have lived and served in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and now, in Asunción, Paraguay: During these years, much of my ministry has involved the
accompaniment and formation of our younger Sisters.
Looking back on my life, one of my conclusions is: when you say yes to God, you have no idea where this yes will take you.
The one security - the only one needed - is love and trust in a God who is all love and all faithfulness.
