Here in the northeast of the United States Lent is a time to cocoon: to hunker down within and examine our lives. It is a season of listening.
We listen to nature as birds migrate and snow freezes.
Ideas have time to germinate and become more defined.
Trees undress and show us their bones.
We set aside time and space to be attentive to the quiet voice of the Spirit.
Maybe the concentrated listening to the Spirit will challenge us to listen more attentively to others.
Maybe it will show us some excess in our life that needs to be reined in.
Maybe we will be called to spend more time in prayer.
Lent is a step-by-step journey of 40 days. Each day we can begin anew, so we need not get discouraged along the way.
God is pleased to have our attention and we are blessed to have been asked for it.
