As a girl, I attended my sister Tracy’s high school graduation from a public school in Prince George’s County, Maryland, in 1977. The commencement speaker was the Reverend Jesse Jackson, who spoke with remarkable eloquence and offered a mantra to the graduating seniors: “I am somebody.”
Over the past year, I have sometimes stepped back—from the news, from difficult conversations, from people whose views differ from mine—in the name of self-preservation. But prayer has been gently revealing how easily that withdrawal can become rooted in fear rather than trust.
Northeast Associates and companion Sisters gathered on November 11 to share a prayer service of remembrance for all connected with the SSND community (particularly deceased Associates).
