Earlier this year the Caroline Center lost Jackie Buedel, the center’s director of academic and career advancement. Jackie suddenly passed away in July.
To honor Jackie’s memory, the Caroline Center staff ceremonially named Somerset Street “Jackie Buedel Way.” The honorary street sign was unveiled on Foundation Day, October 24, 2017.
“Jackie’s spirit I would dare say resides over this ministry and this place,” said Caroline Center executive director Sister Patricia McLaughlin. “I think we’re watched over by her presence and guided by her spirit, and her spirit and presence grow and expand through the depth of individual commitment to the work here at Caroline Center.”
Jackie met the School Sisters of Notre Dame in high school. She attended and eventually graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory School as part of the class of 1973. Her commitment to helping others stayed with her long after her graduation from NDP, and eventually brought her to the Caroline Center.
“Consistent with the charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, we can see in Jackie’s work at the Caroline Center how educating a single woman has served to improve that woman’s life, her family, her community, the city of Baltimore and maybe even the world,” Sister Patricia said.
In addition to the sign unveiling, five white doves were released and a peace plant was in full bloom at the base of the street sign.
“Just as Mother Caroline’s work began here and spread throughout the world, so does Jackie’s work and by extension all the good works that happen here spread throughout the city and beyond,” Sister Patricia said.
