International Women’s Day

On March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day - a day to remember and honor women's achievements and to use these inspiring achievements to advance equality and justice for women everywhere. It is a good day to focus on the ways the four commitments of the AMSSND province will are especially relevant to the lives of women:

-    Water: Women are disproportionately affected by the water crisis, as they are often responsible for collecting water. This takes time away from work, school and caring for family. The lack of water and sanitation locks women in a cycle of poverty. Read more at Water.org

-    Immigration: Unrestrained violence against women is a significant driver of migration, and when legal avenues for migration are limited, women are vulnerable to physical and sexual violence and human trafficking. Read the UN Report, Women on the Run, to learn more.

-    Trafficking: Nearly 3 out 4 trafficking victims are women and girls. Gender-based inequalities such as education and income levels make females especially vulnerable. Learn more here.

-    Haiti: 1 in 3 Haitian women has experienced sexual violence; 1 in 8 Haitian children (60% of whom are girls) are trafficked in restavek slavery; nearly 70% of Haitian people do not have access to potable water. Learn more about the work our partner, Beyond Borders, is doing to help Haitian communities address these issues.
