Invitation to Prayer and Reflection

By Sister Ethel Howley, SSND

Pope Francis published his third encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, in October, 2020, on "fraternity and social friendship."

He said, “I would like to reiterate the appeal for peace, justice and fraternity: in the name of orphans, widows, refugees, and those exiled from their homes and their countries; in the name of all victims of wars, persecution and injustice.”

It's particularly relevant as we observe the 75th anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, December 10, 2023, which says everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.

It's so important and relevant to us, that I was moved to create a resource for prayer and reflection from it.

View it little by little, throughout Advent, or all at once. View it alone or with a group. I hope it is of value to you!

Questions for Reflection:

  • What, and who, are you becoming more aware of?
  • What new prayers are beginning to form in you?
  • What new actions are beginning to suggest themselves to you?
  • How might you share your growing sense of urgency to educate others about these issues?

Suggested Actions:

  • Prayer is always the most powerful action!
  • Contribute time and/or financial resources to causes near your home.
  • Write letters to elected officials, corporate leaders and others in positions of authority.
  • Spread the message in your parish, among your friends and family, among your work and social acquaintances.
