Provincial Councilor, Sister Sharon Kanis

Provincial Council Sister Sharon Kanis

Sister Sharon Kanis, SSND, Ph.D., began her relationship with SSND in 1950, when she entered first grade at Blessed Sacrament School in Baltimore, and she has been deeply attached ever since.

She holds a B.A. in chemistry and an M.A. and Ph.D. in theology and spirituality. Since entering in 1964, her primary ministry has been as teacher, most recently as a professor at Notre Dame of Maryland University where she taught for 27 years. Previously, Sister Sharon served in pastoral ministry and as a member of the formation team of the former Baltimore Province, working with new members, temporary professed, and tertians.

She is a certified spiritual director and leads retreats for women religious, school faculties, students and parish groups. Additionally, she facilitates diverse group meetings.

As community life has become increasingly precious, she appreciates her experiences living in communities ranging from as few as two to more than 30 members. She has also had the joy of joining sisters for brief experiences in Ghana, Nigeria, Guatemala and El Salvador. For fun, she enjoys making music and art.
