Sister Eileen Reilly recently joined the Washington-based Catholic Mobilizing Network as a religious engagement associate.
The network's mission is to mobilize "Catholics and all people of goodwill to value life over death, to end the use of the death penalty, to transform the U.S. criminal justice system from punitive to restorative, and to build capacity in U.S. society to engage in restorative practices."
In her current ministry, Sister Eileen is focused on advocacy against the death penalty, an institution that is beginning to be dismantled in a number of states, most recently in Virginia. However, the penalty was used significantly during the last months of the Trump administration: The United States executed 13 people from July 2019 to January 2021.
"Hopefully, that is now over," Sister Eileen said.
