Immigration and Trafficking
The U.S. State Department estimates that between 14,500 and 17,000 people are trafficked into the U.S. every year. Approximately 70% of those people experience undocumented status. According to this article by Katherine Yoo, an attorney for the Human Trafficking Project, this administration’s anti-immigration policies are undermining the legal successes of anti-trafficking campaigns. Yoo writes, “Hyperenforcement by ICE has aggravated the fear of coming forward among undocumented victims of human trafficking, undermining the U.S. government’s own efforts to tackle the problem. … This administration’s anti-immigrant policies are sabotaging that hard-fought work by refusing to acknowledge that immigrants and victims of human trafficking are often one and the same.”
