By Sister Kathleen Feeley, SSND
"That Deeper Knowing: School Sisters of Notre Dame, Baltimore Province, 1847-2005" describes the history of the Province from its foundation by Mother Theresa and her companions to the creation of the Atlantic-Midwest Province. It was distributed to any Sister who requested it in 2006.
I have 21 copies of the book left, and any Sister or Associate is welcome to ask for a book until they are gone. Contact me at kfeeleyssnd@gmail.com. Please indicate if you can pick up the book at Villa Assumpta, or give me your mailing address.
The book tells of the growth of the Province, the founding of IND and its development, the founding of Notre Dame of Md. and its growth, and the move to Hampton Lane to become Notre Dame Prep. It includes the founding and development of parish schools, and the missionary thrust to Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Nigeria, El Salvador, and South Sudan.
It describes Home Missions in Georgia and Alabama, Immokalee, FL, Garrett County, MD., White River, S.D., Tutwiler, MS, Eagle Pass and Laredo, TX, and Sandy Hook, KY. It narrates the building of Villa Maria, Notch Cliff, and then the Maria Health Care Center at Villa Assumpta.
The final chapters narrate the effects of Vatican II on the life of the Congregation, the beatification of Mother Theresa, and the publication of You Are Sent, as well as the creation of Lay Associates. The book ends with the creation of sponsored and co-sponsored institutions: Marian House, Mother Seton Academy, Caroline Center, and Sisters Academy of Baltimore.
