Today the Church celebrates the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In today’s scripture, we read how Joseph was awakened in a dream and told to take Jesus and his mother and flee to Egypt where he was to stay until he received further instructions. Like tens of millions of people today, the Holy Family became displaced and homeless. Impelled by his love for family, Joseph got up instantly and led Mary and Jesus to safety.
Let us pray for the grace to become more sensitive and responsive to the needs of all those families who suffer from separation and injustices. Let us, as SSNDs, discover anew the love that “puts on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness forgiveness and gratitude” towards our own families, the families who are driven from their homelands and those who live in poverty. When we embrace these virtues, then we come to know more fully, what it means to love and to be loved.
