Haiti Collaboration: LaGonav Students Go To College!
Eleven graduates of the Matenwa Community Learning Center (MCLC) recently began studying at the University of Fondwa, located on Haiti’s mainland near Port au Prince. Matenwa, a Beyond Borders’ partner, offers teacher training and education that is non-violent, participatory, and conducted in Haitian creole. The students have been empowered to “transform their lives through education.” They are studying Business Administration, Veterinary Science, and Agronomy Science. Like most college freshmen, they are excited, nervous and grateful for this opportunity of a higher education. They have overcome many odds to begin this hopeful journey. Addressing Climate Change: COP 29
COP29, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024. The COP 29 UN website has conference news, decisions, and other resources. An agreement was made to triple the flow of money to help developing countries to adopt cleaner energy and cope with the effects of climate change. In the deal, wealthy nations pledged to reach $300 billion per year in support by 2035, three times the current target of $100 billion. However, independent experts claim the needs of developing countries are significantly higher--$1.3 trillion annually. Various media sources, including Chemical & Engineering News and The New York Times reported the reactions from low-income nations.
