In 1982, the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) purchased Notre Dame on the Lake, the former campus of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mequon, Wisconsin, with plans to move Concordia College, a four-year accredited college providing instruction in teacher education, nursing, certified medical assistant, social work, and engineering. Concordia was previously located in downtown Milwaukee, on 31st Street between State and Highland; the move gave the college the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan that still draw students to their campus.
Despite being a Luthern college, Concordia preserved some aspects of the Catholic Sisters' presense there, which can still be seen today. The chapel was kept intact (although the college removed a figure of the Blessed Mary from the altar), as was a mosaic mural dedicated to the SSNDs and their arrival in North America in 1847. A plaque next to the mural, dedicated in 1983, says: "Preserved in honor of The School Sisters of Notre Dame, in gratitude for their help and prayers for Concordia College and in respect for their heritage in Christian education."
On August 27, 1989, the Board of Regents approved Concordia's move to university status, and Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) became the first university among the 10-member Concordia University System.
