The JPIC Departments of AMSSND and CPSSND have issued a joint statement in response to President Trump’s declaration of a “national emergency,” which he used to bypass Congress to obtain funds for a wall at the southern border of the U.S. Unfortunately, there is an emergency at the border, but it is not a threat to U.S. national security. Rather, it is the humanitarian emergency of thousands of vulnerable migrants who are seeking refuge within the U.S., driven by violence, poverty, and instability. To respond to this actual emergency and to protect U.S. borders at the same time, there must be legislative immigration policy reform that makes space for those seeking refuge and streamlines the processing system.
