On February 6, around 4:15 a.m. local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south central Turkey near the Turkey/Syria border. Just 11 minutes later, it was followed by a magnitude 6.7 aftershock. The number of dead is staggering - more than 37,000 as of the one-week anniversary of the disaster. While the miraculous rescue of survivors from the rubble have brought moments of joy, most of the videos and photos coming from the area have been heartbreaking.
The School Sisters of Notre Dame of the Atlantic-Midwest Province have been praying daily for all those who lost their lives, their loved ones, and their homes; for the injured; and for the brave recuse workers who have come from around the world to help. In this time of grief, we turn to Mary, mother of the Church and of our congregation, and ask her divine intervention in bringing peace and strength to all who are suffering. We encourage any who have the means to please give what you can on the form below to support efforts to bring medical assistance, food, water and shelter to those who have been displaced.
Please join us in praying for all who have been lost, all who are broken-hearted, all who are suffering. Know that you, too, are in our prayers, and we are grateful for your support. Prayer is personal, but if you would like to pray in a more formal way, you can find "Prayers for Natural Disasters" here.
Our most sincere blessings,
