Marie Guadalupe Bazon - Spotlight on Achievement Award

Corazon a Corazon applauds Marie Guadalupe Bazon as she accepts a “Spotlight on Achievement” award from Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White April 30, 2018 at the Illinois State Library in Springfield, IL .

“Spotlight on Achievement” Awards are given to 10 statewide ESL or adult literacy learners based on obstacles overcome and measurable strides made in learning. Winners are selected by a panel of literacy advocates at the state level.

Maria began classes 17 months ago, as Corazon opened its doors in Blue Island, testing at a high beginner’s level. Faithful to classes, in spite of working both a full-time and part-time job, Maria is now at the intermediate level. In addition to her work load, Maria is the driver for her parents, making sure they arrive at all their appointments and still makes time for her classes.

Margarita Silva, ESL Coordinator, comments on Maria’s achievements saying how she is much more confident in speaking English and reads more fluently. Maria appreciates better understanding her supervisor at work and enjoys being able to read menu’s in English. Maria’s goal is to become self-reliant in English being able to communicate well in every situation.

We are so proud of Maria and all our learners and tutors at Corazon where every day we see Mother Theresa’s vision of a world made better through education. Maria is but one of over 70 ESL students since opening in Blue Island eighteen months ago.
