Respect

AMSSND LogoReflecting and Praying with our Values for Ministry: Respect  PRINT WORD DOC

For the mission and the ministry of education; for the sisters and their life; for co-workers and ministry partners; for the people and specific populations served; for oneself; for creation; for Catholic identity of my place of ministry and SSND.

handsRespect is an essential part of who I am, what I do and how I go about my work. My showing respect, affirms the inherent dignity within me and those around us. Respect sets the course for human relationships, through my thoughts, words and actions. Respect is seeing others as my neighbor, despite any differences that may exist between us. I am called to respect myself, to accept my strengths and weaknesses as part of who I am, but realizing I have the capacity to grow from them. Finally, respect is about being open to new experiences and settings. By opening my selves up in such a way, I see these new experiences and settings as opportunities to be enriched and grow into the fullness of my potential.

Let us begin now to do earnestly what we one day will wish we had done - to love one another in God and for God’s sake!  (Bl. Theresa, Letter 949)

“When we're curious about the story someone is telling us, when we're respectful of them as they tell it, then we are honoring that person. We are welcoming them into a relationship with us. And we're creating the conditions that support our working together.”
– Margaret Wheatley

“… Showing yourself as a model of good deeds in every respect, with integrity in your teaching, dignity and sound speech that cannot be criticized….” – Titus 2: 7

“Respecting human dignity is important in any profession … because even behind the simple account of an event there are sentiments, emotions, and ultimately, people's lives.”
– Pope Francis
Reflection
What behavior of mine shows that I respect myself? How would I articulate how I understand who I am, what I am capable of and what gift I am in my work?

Who is someone in my life that I highly respect? What qualities and characteristics about this person can I emulate?

What is one instance that someone has shown respect to me? How might I model that for others in ministry?
