My father was the manager of a toy and novelty advertising magazine at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago.
On a day like “Bring Your Child to Work Day,” my 5 siblings and I enjoyed roaming around the place. When asked if we were lost, we said, “No, we’re visiting our father, the manager."
This made a difference!
Mattel and other offices would give us armfuls of toys that were not even on the market yet.
When we got home, our mother would say, “Oh, you’re Santa’s helpers. Let’s put these toys away for now and bring them out at Christmas."
We did get some of these toys at Christmas, and even gave some away!
