In his book Let Us Dream, Pope Francis tells us that "To come out of this crisis better, we have to see clearly, choose well, and act right. ... We must redesign the economy so that it can offer every person access to a dignified existence while protecting and regenerating the natural world."
Congress is now working on legislation that will support our nation's infrastructure and rebuild the economy after the pandemic. As School Sisters of Notre Dame, we are committed to advocating on behalf of "the dignity of life and the care of all creation." So, following the exhortations of Pope Francis, we join the U.S. Catholic Bishops in calling on Congress to work together, in a bipartisan way, to make investments that will promote the common good and empower the most vulnerable among us, including our Earth, to flourish. This is an advocacy action that directly addresses several of the Laudato Si' Action Platform Goals—particularly care of persons who are poor and care of Earth—to which SSNDs are committed.
Tell your Representatives and Senators to act now by working across the aisle and committing to climate and energy policy that benefits those disproportionately impacted by environmental degradation; prioritizing job creation for persons who are poor and marginalized; ensuring access to safe, decent, and affordable housing for all Americans; and enacting economic policies that strengthen families.
