The Sisters enjoyed an armchair visit to India in February. The trip was Part I of two parts, hosted by LEAD aide Shilpa George.
First, Shilpa guided the Sisters by video through Onam, a special celebration held yearly in India. It was a joy to see the food, dance and fun enjoyed by all who attend.
Onam is a Hindu festival which usually falls between August and September. It is celebrated for 10 days.
As many other Hindu holidays, there are multiple legends explaining the origin and religious significance of Onam. The most common of them says Onam celebrates the annual return of the benevolent King Mahabali, known for his selflessness and devotion, who was granted permission to visit his people once a year by Lord Vishnu.
Shilpa, dressed in a traditional Sari worn for this festival, also demonstrated some dance steps and explained the folklore.
In Part 2 of our armchair visit to India, Shilpa will make us a traditional Indian dessert and tell us more interesting facts about her country.
The afternoon was well attended and enjoyed by all. What a great way to demonstrate the internationality of SSND. Forever all-inclusive and welcoming.
