Susan Flansburg joined the Department of Communications as a Content Specialist on January 4. Susan is a 20-year veteran of communications for Catholic Sisters. She served as communications director for a community of Benedictine Sisters for 17 years before leaving to pursue freelance writing opportunities with congregations including the School Sisters of St. Francis and the Sisters of Charity of Halifax, and for publications such as VISION Vocation Guide and Horizon. Her 2021 article for VISION won in the Best Feature Article division of Catholic Media Association's annual award competition. The article was adapted from her vocation guidebook, Feels Like Home.
Susan comes by writing honestly: Her parents were both reporters. She got her own start in a television newsroom, writing and producing the news. She has also worked in marketing and advertising, and has served in a variety of communications roles for many businesses and nonprofit organizations.
She has continued to pursue education from the best in the field, taking classes and attending conferences in such fields as donor-centric fundraising communications, social media strategy and, always, writing. Because Susan is, at heart, a storyteller.
Susan, who will be working remotely, lives along the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa, with husband Alan; son James; two cats, a dog, and a few thousand books.
In her new role, Susan will be taking responsibility for the Friday AMSSND newsletter starting January 13. Please send her items you would like to see in the newsletter from now on (sflansburg@amssnd.org). The deadline for submitting items is Wednesdays at noon Eastern.
Susan will also be interviewing Sisters for stories for our website, especially this year's Jubilarians. So, Sisters, please look out for emails from her and cooperate as you are able. It is important to the Communications department to get your stories out there!
