Christmas Past, Christmas Present

Christmas always brings a mix of emotions for me. I have so many wonderful memories. I have a few bittersweet memories, too.

I grew up in a big family where Christmas was always an event.

With new clothes laid out days in advance, we always attended Midnight Mass no matter how tired we were.

Our caroling sometimes turned into more laughter than singing.

It was the kind of togetherness that made the whole house feel warm.

It always felt magical!

Those traditions shaped so much of what I still love about the season.

In recent years, we’ve lost family members right around Christmas, which has changed the season in some tender ways.

Strangely, it has also deepened my appreciation for the people who are still here, and for the moments we get to share.

It reminds me not to take any of it for granted.

Even with the losses over the years, the season still fills me with a steady sense of joy and gratitude.

There’s something about the lights, the music, and the simple act of being together that keeps the spirit of Christmas alive in a really comforting way.
