The Season of Creation begins on September 1! We invite you to view this SSND video and reflect on how you can celebrate the season, themed “Jubilee for the Earth.”

During this 2020 Season of Creation (Sept. 1- Oct. 4), take some time to read, reflect on resources that will be highlighted weekly by the JPIC office:

•    View video Christianity and Ecology with Heather Eaton and Mary Evelyn Tucker
•    Read Sister Ethel Howley’s essay, Investors, Climate Change, and Human Rights, to learn how the AMSSND province uses the power of investing to promote justice
•    Sign up here to listen to Climate scientist and evangelical, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, as she joins Rev. Susan Hendershot, President of National Interfaith Power & Light, to discuss the latest outlook on climate change, and how to communicate the climate message effectively, from a position of shared values. Program is scheduled for September 14 at 12pm (EST).

Race Matters

To further your ongoing reflection on “I Can’t Breathe,” please view our resource series, “Racism and the AMSSND Commitments.” The four commitments of the AMSSND province—universal access to clean water, justice for immigrants, the end of human trafficking, and sustainable development in Haiti—are interwoven in a variety of ways. One critical link between them is racism. Working toward each of these goals will require us to dismantle the racist systems that oppress people of color.

Immigration

•    Please join Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service for its brand new Virtual Book Series of insightful interviews with authors and experts in the immigration landscape today. Each week, they will speak to an author about the most pressing topics in migration — from climate displacement to refugee resettlement to the Family Separation Crisis to the role of faith in immigration. Learn more and register today!

•    On Monday, August 3, Netflix aired a new docu-series called Immigration Nation, which offers an in-depth look at the reality of America’s immigration system. Filmmakers Shaul Schwarz and Christina Clusiau were embedded with immigration officers, and the series allows viewers to peer into the secretive agencies waging the war on immigrants. The documentary and filmmakers were featured in a recent New York Times piece that detailed how DHS and ICE had fought to delete scenes and delay the release of the film until after the election. We hope you can find time to this important work!
