Immigration Myths you may encounter

  1. Immigrants are taking American jobs
    1. Any decrease in native-born employment due to non-labor force activities (retirement, school enrollment, disability)
  2. Immigrants increase the crime rate/criminal activity
    1. Only connection between immigration and crime is that immigration decreases crime
    2. Immigrants have lower felony and incarceration rates than U.S.-born citizens
  3. Immigrants come in illegally because they don’t want to wait in line for legal immigration and/or have something to hide
    1. There is no “line” or legal pathway for the majority of undocumented immigrants. Most do not have the necessary family or employment relationships and cannot access humanitarian protection.
  4. People coming into the US illegally are responsible for fentanyl and other illegal drugs pouring over the border
    1. Fentanyl is primarily brought to the US by American citizens through legal ports of entry.
