Solidarity With Grassy Narrows First Nation

By Sister Barbara Paleczny, SSND

In September, I was at the River Run event in Toronto for Grassy Narrows, an Anishinaabe community in Northwestern Ontario. There were thousands of people there to protest mercury poisoning of Grassy Narrows’s land.

One hundred community members came 1900 km by bus from Grassy. I met a few of them.

They loved my sign: "Chi Miigwech" (Big Thank You) Grassy Narrows, School Sisters of Notre Dame and the names of all our Sisters who had lived there for decades.

They were delightful in remembering and chatting, and very happy to take the sign back with them.

This festive march was long and filled with people of all races who were clearly supporting Indigenous and care for water.

Signs and banners were abundant, large and beautiful. I was very grateful I hadn't given into the temptation not to go. There were 30 of us in the school bus from Waterloo. The day was more than a good experience.
