Waterdown Revives Beloved Tradition

By Anne MacNeil, LEAD Co-Coordinator

On Epiphany Sunday, the SSND Waterdown community revived the ancient Christian tradition of blessing doorways.

Traditionally, this involves marking the door with crosses and the initials of the Magi, framed by the year: 20+C+M+B+26.

This year, the LEAD team adapted the practice creatively.

Instead of chalking, we prepared signs that were blessed by Father Pawel during a short prayer service with hymns (see prayers below).

These signs were then placed on every door as a visible reminder of faith and dedication for the year ahead.

It was a meaningful activity that inspired thoughtful discussion on both its historical significance and its renewed relevance.

The signs symbolize our hope for God’s blessing on all who enter and live within our home.

They serve as a call to hospitality, respect, and spiritual purpose throughout 2026.

They remind us of our commitment to preserving cherished traditions and fostering a spirit of faith and purpose throughout the new year.

They remind us of our commitment to continuing to create spaces where everyone feels welcomed and supported.

They remind us of our commitment to the practice of hope, unity, and dedication to living out our mission.

May 2026 bring blessings to all!

Prayers for the Blessing of the Signs

Blessed are you, Lord of all creation. Bless us as we use this chalk to mark our doors in your honour. May our rooms be dwelling places of faith, goodness, self control, mutual respect for one another, hospitality towards strangers, and obedience to your word. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us, and may we find Jesus in everyone we meet, for He is Lord forever and ever. Amen.
