The SSND Charlesgate Community in Towson, MD, where 19 of us form a community, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Evening, linking it with the call to universal communion and interculturality from our General Chapter Call.
We started the evening with the prayer quote from the Hispanic Heritage Month section of our AM-SSND website:
Our first task in approaching another people, another culture, another religion is to TAKE OFF OUR SHOES, for the place we are approaching is HOLY … REMEMBERING GOD was THERE before our arrival.
We invited one of our Mexican Associates, Kattia Gibb and a young Salvadoran woman, Yohanna Granados Martinez, to share their journeys to the US. We asked them to share about their life here now, in another culture, while continuing to cherish their Hispanic Heritage.
They brought pupusas from El Salvador and tamales from Mexico for us to taste to end the evening. Everyone enjoyed the sharing and knew we were on “holy ground”!
