Every year, Canadians of all ethnic backgrounds - including Sister Julie Lattner and me - walk together to affirm publicly our commitment to implement the official 94 Calls to Action for Truth and Reconciliation.
These aim to address the legacy of residential schools and promote reconciliation among Indigenous First Nations/Métis/Inuit and non-Indigenous Canadians.
Niigaan Sinclair, a Canadian Indigenous leader, notes that this year, 14 million people – a third of Canada’s population - wore the indigenous orange shirts, walked publicly and celebrated together on Sept. 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This marks an unfolding revolution. We now have ‘a tipping point’ of public agreement.
Sister Barbara Paleczny and I heard Dr. Sinclair speak at an Indigenous dinner sponsored by the Waterloo Catholic District School Board.
As violence spreads and democracy is threatened, he said, “conditions are getting worse”. There is no doubt that “Winter is coming and we must prepare together, to care for everyone".
