March 8th is International Women's Day! The theme for 2019 is #BalanceforBetter! The campaign runs all year long. It doesn't end on International Women's Day.
The campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize continuous collective action, with #BalanceforBetter activity reinforced and amplified all year.
Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Collective action and shared responsibility for driving a gender-balanced world is key. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women - while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance.
The first International Women's Day occurred in 1911, supported by over one million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not a country, group or organization specific. Post your message of gender balance with the hashtag #IWD2019 with a "hands out" balance pose for a strong call-to-action for others to also help forge a #BalanceforBetter.
At the School Sisters of Notre Dame, we have helped women and girls get an education for 185 years! We have taught in elementary, secondary, and university classrooms, and we embrace the concept that education goes beyond the classroom walls and into social service centers and programs –anywhere individuals seek to grow and improve their lives and their communities. We believe that a just society is built by helping each person to reach the fullness of their potential and we stand up on their behalf.
The sixth annual celebration of Catholic Sisters Week, which always begins on International Women's Day, runs through March 14, and has more than 250 live events planned (a record), plus a handful of online events.
