School Sisters of Notre Dame Announce Move from Villa Notre Dame
Wilton Celebration
A ceremony was held on July 31 at Villa Notre Dame in Wilton, CT to mark the closing of the building as a residence for the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The former Wilton motherhouse, which is now part of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Atlantic-Midwest Province, is a much larger facility than what is needed to care for the number of Sisters who currently reside there. While future use of the property has yet to be determined, the Sisters will be moving this month to Watermark in Bridgeport, Conn., which is able to accommodate all of the Sisters in one location, retaining their community.
Former Sisters, Associates, family of Sisters, donors and other friends of the SSND were invited to spend one last day at Villa Notre Dame, the site where many of them had taken their vows, created years of Oktoberfest memories, and stayed for countless meetings and special occasions. “It is difficult when our community has to make decisions that affect the lives of so many people,” said Provincial Leader Sister Charmaine Krohe in her remarks. “Almost nine years ago the province began a study of our properties. Our Sisters decided to divest of the properties and let go of managing our own healthcare. For a little over five years, the Council and an SSND-appointed committee spent a considerable amount .f time evaluating alternative living arrangements for the Sisters in the surrounding area. This process led to the selection of Watermark, which the committee and Council determined was the community most well-equipped to provide the Sisters not only beautiful apartment residences but also the common spaces, amenities, and environment to maintain their sense of community with each other.” The Sisters will start moving the week of August 9.
We thank all who were able to join us in person and in spirit.
